Volunteer: Detention Advocacy Helpers

ABOUT OUR DETENTION ADVOCACY PROGRAM

Stand Up Placer is the point of contact for the federal Prison Rape Elimination Act 2003 (PREA) program within the Placer County jail system. The purpose of PREA is to provide for the analysis of the incidence and effects of prison rape in federal, state, and local institutions and to provide information, resources, recommendations and funding to protect individuals from prison rape. Simply, no matter what crime a person committed, rape is not part of the penalty.

In addition to inmates accessing our detention services under PREA we also provide services to incarcerated persons from word-of-mouth referrals from current or former clients, law enforcement and social service agency referrals. Our Detention Advocacy services are free, trauma-informed, non-discriminatory, confidential and include crisis intervention, emotional support to assistance with safety planning and navigating the criminal justice process.

WHY DETENTION ADVOCACY IS IMPORTANT

Inmates are people too. They are human beings who, like anyone else, do not deserve to be sexually assaulted or ridiculed and made fun of, because of their traumatic experience.
